Luke Harris, accounting graduate student at Missouri State University, received the Stuart Cameron Margaret McLeod Memorial Scholarship from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) last month.
The competition for the scholarship was tough, attracting applicants from across the U.S. and other countries. Harris was the sole recipient.
“I was shocked when I first found out,” Harris said.
Standing out from the crowd
To apply for the scholarship, Harris had to be an active member of the IMA student chapter, fill out an application and receive two letters of recommendation.
He had help and guidance from professors in the MSU School of Accountancy, including Dr. Olen Greer, a per course instructor of accounting.
“Dr. Greer was my foremost mentor in applying for the scholarship,” Harris said. “He has always been willing to listen to me and give valuable input.”
Harris believes his ability to balance school, organizations and volunteering helped him stand out in the application process. He also studied abroad in France and will participate in a humanitarian relief trip to Greece this summer.
“I think it is my duty as a student to actively build relationships and seek out opportunities,” Harris said. “That way I can ensure I will leave college with a wealth of knowledge as I start my career.”
Looking ahead
As the scholarship recipient, Harris will speak at the IMA Student and Educator Awards Luncheon on Nov. 2 in St. Louis.
After graduation, Harris plans on pursuing a career in auditing at a public accounting firm.
