On February 19, the 2014 graduating class of athletic training students for Missouri State University had a very successful day speaking with their legislators at the Capitol in Jefferson City. As part of their Contemporary Topics in Athletic Training course, students participate in an activity that communicates the interests of athletic training and educates members of the community about the profession. Coincidentally, the Missouri Athletic Trainers’ Association organizes four separate trips to the Capitol throughout the spring semester when athletic trainers and athletic training students can meet with state legislators during their spring legislative session. Accompanying Dr. Michael Hudson and four other licensed athletic trainers, the students meet with legislators to educate them about the practice of athletic training and lobby for the health care needs of those individuals in Missouri who are served by athletic trainers. To celebrate the success of the day, the group enjoyed a tasty pizza buffet for lunch at Arris’ Pizza just across the street from the Capitol.
In reflecting over this trip, Dr. Hudson stated “I enjoy sharing this experience with the students ever year and I am already looking forward to the trip next year!”
