Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first celebrated as a federal holiday in 1986, making Monday, January 20, 2020 the 35th annual day honoring America’s most famous civil rights hero. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Federal Holiday as a national day of service, proclaiming the day “a day on, not a day off.” Embracing Dr. King’s words – “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve” – observing MLK Day through service is a way to begin each year with a commitment to making your community a better place.
Dr. King devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice, and economic opportunity through service to others. He taught us that everyone has a role to play. Today, serving others is one way that we can hold ourselves accountable to creating the just and equitable future that Dr. King dreamed of.
How will you serve on MLK Day and throughout the year?
