Take a moment to get to know the new director of Multicultural Programs, Dr. Kimberly Martin.
Tell us about yourself. I hail from the great state of Michigan! I’ve lived there most of my life, with stints in Ohio, Indiana, Georgia and now Missouri! For my undergraduate degree, I attended the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where I received a BA in General Studies. I received my MBA from Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta, and finally my Ph.D, from Oakland University in Rochester Michigan. I am the oldest of three girls.
What drew you to Missouri State? What drew me to MSU was two things: The opportunity itself, to be a director of Multicultural programs here, and the opportunity to work with Dr. Michele Smith. In a very short time she has become an invaluable asset to me. I had a great time when I visited campus for my interview, and met some great folks that I re-connected with when I accepted the offer.
What are your goals for your first six months working in Multicultural Services and Programs? My goal for my first six months are simple: to learn MSU culture, procedures, systems, and people. In only two weeks, I feel that it has been somewhat a baptism by fire, but it’s been great.
Why are the programs you work with so important to Missouri State and the Springfield community? The reason programs we work with in Multicultural programs are important is that research has shown time and time again that diversity on the college level challenges stereotypes, promotes personal growth and health; it encourages critical thinking and helps students, faculty and staff learn from and communicate effectively with people of all backgrounds. Lastly, it strengthens communities and the workplace.
Share a fun fact about yourself. Fun fact about me: I love to travel and I love animals. I lived in Tanzania, Africa for three months, and have been to New Zealand. I have fed a stingray, swam with dolphins and kissed a sea lion.
What is something you have learned about Missouri State/Springfield that surprised you? One fun thing I have learned about Springfield that has surprised me is all the great food! I hope I don’t gain any weight!
