The Garst Dining Center will be offering a full meal created for Iftar (the main meal of the fasting day, which occurs at sunset every day of Ramadan) during late night dining from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm on Sundays – Thursdays. Students may have this for the regular meal swipe they would use for any other meal in a dining center. Meal plan dining dollars, cash, or credit cards are also accepted as usual.
The menu will be served at the Kitchen Station and will be available for everyone who comes to the dining center. The menu will include a halal meat, vegetables, starches, and a second made to order protein option, which will frequently be a type of fish.
The halal meat will be labeled clearly because meats that are not halal will also be available in separate areas. The manufacturer’s packaging will be retained for the halal meats and available for students to inspect to verify the meat is halal. Salad, fruit, and desserts will also be available.
Dining Services is also providing Suhoor packs at Garst Dining Center for students observing Ramadan as an option that can be purchased using one meal swipe. Suhoor is a healthy meal eaten early in the morning, ahead of sunrise. Suhoor packs contain items high in energy and nutrition to help sustain students until Iftar.
Suhoor packs are limited to one per day for students using a meal swipe. Suhoor packs may also be purchased with dining dollars, cash, or credit card for $9.49. All ingredients are reviewed to ensure the products are permissible.
The contents of Suhoor packs will change and vary throughout Ramadan. Suhoor packs will be available 7 days per week throughout Ramadan from the Garst Dining Center during late night hours or during dinner hours on days without late night service.
On Friday and Saturday evenings and other dates when late night dining is not available, students observing Ramadan will be able to obtain a carryout meal of their choice from any open dining location in PSU and any open dining center. If halal meats are specifically needed for a carryout meal, they may be obtained with advanced notice from any open dining center (Garst Dining Center, Blair-Shannon Dining Center, or Heitz House Dining Center.)
Providing advanced notice will allow us to have the meal ready for students to prevent them from having to wait for the meal to be prepared. Having to spend unnecessarily time in a dining center before breaking the fast would be difficult due to sights and aromas of food.
Students can request a carry out meal with halal meat from the director of the dining center of their choice. *Note: Halal meats are always available from the three dining centers. Students who require only meats that are labeled halal should speak with the director of the dining center they frequent most often.
The days and hours may vary during Spring Holiday. Changes to operating hours will be posted on the Dine On Campus page, as well as in the Garst Dining Center.
