The FRC is your home for recreational sports, training, club sports, self care, and all around fun place to relax! We are here to support the MSU community in staying healthy and active. We have many opportunities to get you involved today.
Who We Are
Campus Recreation, housed at Foster Recreation Center (FRC) and Betty and Bobby Allison Recreation Fields, is a student-driven department dedicated to providing recreational opportunities and promoting overall wellness. Our team consists of eleven full-time staff members, including our director, associate directors, assistant directors, administrative assistant, maintenance, and custodial staff. Additionally, we are one of the largest student employers on campus, with 117 undergraduate student workers and six graduate assistants helping make the Rec Center a welcoming and engaging space for all.
What We Do
First and foremost, we have cultivated a safe, welcoming community. We are student-driven, not only for our patrons but for our staff. By developing a place that not only gives the MSU student body a place to recharge in their preferred activity, the FRC is also a place that strives to create young professionals. Our focus is on recreation and wellness. This will include facilitating a place to engage in fitness goals, but it also means making sure the health, mental and physical, of our community is being cared for. This is managed by promoting rec sports, aquatics activities, exploring the world with outdoor adventures, and our many different options within our fitness and wellness programs. Engaging with the broader community to promote health and wellness through outreach programs, community events, and partnerships. This can include offering health education workshops, collaborating with local organizations on wellness initiatives, and providing resources for students to explore and adopt healthy habits both on and off campus.
We Want You to Know
Recreation is an important outlet for everyone, and key to any college student developing a healthy balance with school and the rest of life. This is a skill that the recreation department works hard on promoting. That there is a place to have fun, relax, and enjoy the things you like to enjoy.
Champions for Student Success
We live by our mission “We are a community dedicated to providing opportunities for recreation and wellness that develop healthy and engaged citizens.” A perfect example of this is how we create a relationship with our student staff. Our department is largely defined by our student staff and their dedication to campus recreation. Through their commitment to have a safe, welcoming, and fun place to be engaged on the MSU campus we then see this reflected in the student body when they come to the FRC or our events. By offering various engaging activities students that partake in campus recreation have the chance to develop better habits that foster success. Through exercise, competition, community, play, teamwork, and new experiences campus recreation is pivotal in creating individuals who strive to achieve their goals. We give everyone the opportunity to come to the rec center to experience every pastime, activity, or interest to help people find new motivations to grow a richer life.
Collaborating Opportunities
We have a huge, dynamic space that can facilitate any event. The FRC is great for birthday parties, but it can also be used for banquets, presentations, practices, or anything you can think up. The FRC welcomes any opportunity to develop events that support our mission. We have partnered with academics, athletics, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Activities Council, Admissions, employment fairs, and outside organizations groups like the Springfield Public Schools and Special Olympics. Each with unique requirements and resources that we have risen to the occasion.
Recent Achievements
We had the honor of being showcased in the July/August 2024 issue of CAMPUS REC magazine. This included six pages of interviews with our staff and a cover shoot. It was a great moment to cheer on our staff’s hard work and communicate our message to a very wide audience. One of our very own student leaders, Ashley Sanders, was chosen to officiate the NIRSA National Flag Football Tournament. An amazing opportunity for her to display her skills as an amazing ref. Camp Claw, our weekly summer camp, has exceeded our wildest expectations! We are looking forward to our 4th year with record numbers and no sign of slowing down.
Goals for the Upcoming Year
Campus Recreation continues to grow each year, both in facilities and programming. As student engagement increases, we recognize the need for more space. Our top priority is to expand the Foster Recreation Center, and we are actively working on securing the necessary resources to bring this plan to life. Our goal is to enhance the Rec Center and continue reaching as many students as possible with improved facilities and programming.
