Being right and responsible

“Paws” Civility Initiative

March 2, 2020 by David Gambino

Hello MSU Bears!

It is almost March, and finally starting to show small signs of spring, with warmer weather sure to follow. March will be an exciting month for the Office of Student Conduct with the start of the inaugural Paws Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to motivate the campus to pause, and take the time to learn about how we can all increase civility. We are excited to be partnering with others on campus to bring the topic of civility to the forefront of discussion. Among our partners for this effort are Public Affairs, Green Dot, Partners in Prevention, and University Safety. The goal this month is to educate as many students as we can on topics of civility, and inspire others to share those positive themes with others. Whether that is saying hello to a fellow classmate, or holding the door for another, the possibilities for displaying an understanding of civility are endless!

Some events to look forward to this month are:

-The Civility Essay Contest-The essay contest is designed for students to share what it means to them to show civility on our campus. Rules for the contest can be found on the Office of Student Conduct’s webpage. The winner of the essay competition will receive a $75 bookstore gift card, with a second place prize being a $25 dollar gift card.

-Paw-It-Forward Initiative -Students will receive a Paw-It-Forward card during tabling and will be encouraged to display civility by doing random acts of kindness for one another. The goal is for students to continue to pass the cards around campus after witnessing themes of civility. Students will then share these acts on their social media pages using the hashtag #PassItOn.

-Educational Programming (Tabling) in the PSU every Wednesday morning will give students the opportunity to create their own civility pledges while learning more about civility and the conduct process on our campus.
