Love Your Melon is dedicated to raising awareness for childhood cancer as well as donating hats to children battling cancer. We do this by word of mouth, advertising on social media and wearing the apparel on campus. For every hat purchased, one hat is donated to a child battling cancer. Our crew also puts on parties for children in the surrounding area that have been diagnosed with cancer. Our organization’s sole purpose is to raise awareness of pediatric cancer. We are excited to announce that we are holding our first MAJOR event of the year! We’re hosting a DKMS swab drive on November 15th in the Plaster Student Union from 11-2! DKMS is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to bring awareness and fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. They do this by recruiting bone marrow donors, raising funds to match donor registration costs, supporting the improvement of therapies through research, and supporting patients from day one of their diagnoses. Why should you donate? 70% of cancer patients will not find a match donor within their family and will rely on finding an unrelated donor. A bone marrow or stem transplant can be a lifesaving treatment for cancer patients AND approximately 70 other diseases. Only 40% of patients in the US will receive a transplant. There are currently more than 15,000 HLA characteristics known that can occur in millions of combinations so finding a match is a bit like winning the lottery! Cells from younger donors lead to better long-term survival outcomes for the patient. Due to under-representation on the registry, minorities have a tougher time finding a lifesaving match. Let us know if these times do not work for you and we will attempt to meet up with you separately! Go to https://www.dkms.org/en to learn more!! Please feel free to share and spread the word.
