One thing I didn’t particularly consider when researching this country are the Aboriginal natives. I got so scooped up into the Great Barrier Reef and the coffee I didn’t quite think about the very real culture that Australia was based around. The first British settlers landed in what is now Sydney around 1788, and has a similar basis of history when compared to American settlers, for the colonizers spread western culture, religion, art, and music to the Aboriginals. Even throughout the settlement the Aboriginal culture continues to shine through today in many objects, including one of Australias symbols the Boomerang! One interesting thing I found when researching the beginning of this country was that women in Australia were the first to be allowed to hold a legislative office position and vote as early as 1895. I learned so many more things about this country, and I’m very excited to experience it for myself!
