Today we visited Elgas, Australia’s largest propane and butane company. I really liked having the opportunity to go inside an office in Australia and ask questions about the company. I asked a lot about the workplace and cultural differences. One big difference in workplaces is that employees are attracted to companies by their culture, not the benefits because Australia has a public healthcare system. It was interesting learning about Elgas going through being owned by a German company and now a US company and how the rules and regulations of their jobs would change. I also found it really interesting that their sales people earn a base salary and commission, however they only get their commission payment in April so it helps with employee retention. I really appreciate all the time Geoff took to show us Melbourne and teach us about Elgas. This part of our trip was a really great learning opportunity.
