I was surprised to learn how countries have such varying views regarding genetically modified (GM) foods. The text explains that products that affect or are affected by health issues can be sensitive to political concerns. For example, all GM foods have been banned in Europe. This caused several fast food restaurant chains to also go GM-free. However, in the United States, people are not as concerned. U.S. companies are slowing the use of GM foods, but they have not entirely stopped using them. (With the exception of McDonalds – McDonald’s has officially stopped using genetically modified potatoes for french fries in U.S. stores.) It definitely shocked me, because in my opinion the U.S. is a little “behind” in its decision making and opinions regarding GM foods. Maybe people just aren’t as concerned or aren’t aware of its affects, but it still seems a little odd that the U.S. has not made similar decisions as countries in Europe.
