There are many Study Away opportunities happening this year for Theatre and Dance Students at MSU. Two of these opportunities have fast approaching deadlines; Berlin and Uganda. Acting faculty Melanie Dryer-Lude will be coordinating both of these trips.
Berlin:
Need to know facts:
- Travel Dates: March 10, 2018-March 18, 2018
- Program Fee: $2,630
- Deadline for Applying: November 1, 2017
Information about the trip:
Berlin, Germany has become one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world: it is hip, trendy, smart, and affordable. Think New York City + everything cool in Europe without the price tag. The United States leads the world in creating great film and television. In Germany, cultural expression is all about theatre. German theatre is sassy, daring, funny, and often surprising. German theatre artists almost always include history and politics in the message they are communicating to the public. On this trip you will learn the basics of German history, a bit about German politics, and a lot about how theatre works in Germany. This will allow you to compare and contrast what you learn in Berlin to what you already know about American theatrical expression.
Uganda:
Need to know facts:
- Travel Dates: May 19, 2018-June 5, 2018
- Program Fee: $3,320
- Deadline for Applying: December 1, 2017
Information about the trip:
Uganda is a magical place to visit. During our time together, you will learn and experience things you cannot yet imagine. Because this is a service learning trip, you will be working as you travel and study. Service will include: teaching English and acting to Ndere Troupe members, sharing your expertise with students at Kyambogo University, and helping to build a school house in a rural village. You will visit three cities while we travel. Kampala is the capital city and the most urban environment in the Uganda. Here you will meet your hosts, the Ndere Troupe, and visit various sites in the city. Gulu is a smaller city in northern Uganda where you will see an historic slave trading center and meet a village chief. On the way to and from Kyabanyoro, you will experience rural life in southwestern Uganda, camping out in a small village, visiting two state parks, canoeing on a local lake, and learning about Punishment Island. We won’t forget to take you on safari and let you shop for gifts to bring home.
