There will be two remaining workshops with Craig Carnelia this semester. During these workshops students of all majors are invited to observe Craig work with students on acting the song. Participants for the workshops have already been chosen, but anyone is able to attend and observe the workshop for free.
About Craig Carnelia:
Craig is best known as a composer-lyricist in musical theater and an acting teacher for the Broadway theater community, where he taught private, ongoing classes for 26 years before moving to Springfield in March 2017.
As a songwriter, he contributed songs to the Broadway musical “Working” (along with Stephen Schwartz, James Taylor and Micki Grant) and wrote the full score for “Is There Life After High School?” Off-Broadway, he wrote the music and lyrics for “Three Postcards” (a musical play by Craig Lucas) and contributed to “Diamonds,” a revue directed by Hal Prince. Working with composer Marvin Hamlisch, he wrote the lyrics for Broadway’s “Sweet Smell of Success” (book by John Guare) and “Imaginary Friends” (a musical play by Nora Ephron). His latest musical “Poster Boy” premiered at the Williamstown Theater Festival in August, 2016.
He has mentored young songwriters through the ASCAP Musical Theater Workshop, the Dramatists Guild Fellows Program, the Eugene O’Neill Musical Theatre Conference and the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project where he serves as head-teacher.
Awards include the first annual Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Musical Theater Award, the Kleban Award for distinguished lyric writing, the Johnny Mercer Award and two “Best Plays” citations. He has also been nominated for two Tony Awards and two Drama Desk Awards.
His acting workshops and master classes have been conducted at many of the country’s most prestigious universities, including CCM (for 25 years), Northwestern (for 12 years) and Elon University (for 10 years).
