It’s The Comedy Of… Errors?

November 22, 2019 by Theatre and Dance

Yes, you read that right! Presented by Missouri State University’s Theatre and Dance Department is William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors directed by Dr. Kyle A. Thomas. The show features a “whirlwind of mistakes” surrounding the mistaken identities of not one, but two sets of twins, with neither sibling in either set realizing the other twin exists. What are the odds? It brings fast-paced tomfoolery and hilarity to the stage that are sure to have audiences doubled over in their seats from nonstop laughter.

With this being Dr. Thomas’s first main-stage production here at MSU, we decided to interview him to see what he thought about the show, and his review couldn’t have been better. He says, “It’s Shakespeare, so it’s full of wit and beautiful language. But, it’s also one of the silliest and most approachable of all of Shakespeare’s plays.”

When asked how the process of directing his first show as a new faculty member was, he said, “It’s been a joy! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with an incredibly talented cast, designers, and crew- all of whom have certainly made my job a lot easier. I have been laughing through every rehearsal, and I’ve really been inspired by the work of the actors as they jump into their roles and make some of the most hilarious choices I’ve ever seen.”

The show’s Assistant Director, graduate student Mallory Maggi, also had some inspiring comments to make about the show. “It has been so fun to see how this show has evolved from beginning to end. It is so rewarding to see the actors get it. Helping them find the character, the story, and the world has just been so fun.”

When asked how she [Maggi] has enjoyed working with Dr. Thomas, she said, “Working with Kyle is a blast. He’s so respectful of everyone’s time, ideas, feeling, and creativity. He has been so encouraging and welcoming to me, a perfect stranger, and I’m so glad I got to work with him.”

Still not convinced to come see it? Here’s what Stage Manager Melissa Brouk has to say: “People should come see the show because everyone has put so much work into this beautiful piece.” If that’s not enough, she says, “to come have a good laugh with us. This show has come a long way from just being an idea to actually being put on stage. This process has always amazed me and I love watching it every time.”

Come see the show to see “how this amazing cast squeezes every ounce of hilarity from the script” and “see the beautiful and playful designs for the show.”
