“A single light left burning whenever a theatre is dark.”
Amidst everything going on in the world, with all of the productions stopped, you can rest assured our spirits are not. Behind every theatre door and down the steps to the center of the stage, is a single light known as a “ghost light.” Originally used for safety purposes should anyone be walking around the stage in the dark, they now hold a symbolism for hope (and maybe some superstition).
With the ghost light on, it means that we, and everything we stand for, will be back. We will not let these unforeseen circumstances get in the way of our art and our inspirations. Before anyone knows it, our dancers will be back to the marley floors, our actors to the sets, and our singers to their instruments. Our rehearsals are not stopped, merely preparing. Out of this will come fresh life and appreciation. Out of this will come playwrights with new and original scripts, composers with breath-taking compositions, and choreographers with courageous pieces. Out of this will come an amplified and unrelinquishing strive to do what we’re meant to do, where we’re meant to do it.
We will not let these events hinder our artistic expressions. We have left the ghost light on to lead us back to the stage when it is time. Stay strong, Bears.
