Virtual auditions for the 2021 Spring Dance Concert are now underway!
Just as audition sign-ups for the spring 2021 Mainstages have begun, so have submissions for next spring’s dance concert! Titled “Dancing the Next Dimension,” this concert is tackling dance for film in a way never before done by the department. For the first time, submissions are open for student choreographers to submit proposals to showcase their own work to be adjudicated by our dance faculty. Additionally, the final results will be showcased by projection onto the side of Craig Hall and in one of Brick City’s buildings. If interested in auditioning as a dancer or choreographer, please read down below for more information.
Auditionees: If you are auditioning to be a dancer in one of the dance films, please follow these instructions. Start by clicking the link down below that leads to the Airtable website. It will take you to the “Auditions” tab and the form that needs to be completed by December 4th. You will need to include personal contact information, availability, a headshot (does not need to be professional), and your dance video submission. The form includes an audition link where Sarah Wilcoxon demonstrates the audition directions and instructions. After learning it and recording yourself performing it, you will need to upload it as “unlisted” to YouTube and paste the link into the audition form, upload it through a Google Drive link, or insert it directly as a computer file in the “Attachments” section.
Casting will not occur until after the submission deadline. If you are casted as a dancer by a choreographer, they will reach out to you directly. You are able to be cast in a maximum of three pieces. Once casted, please change your personal casting status under the “All Applicants” tab to “not available for casting,” so other choreographers know not to consider you.
Choreographers: If you would like one of your pieces considered for adjudication, please follow these instructions. Start by clicking the link down below that leads to the Airtable website, and select the “Choreographers” tab. You will need to fill out your personal contact information, the name of the piece (you may leave as “untitled” if not yet determined), cast list (once determined), and any potential notes (such as if it’s already completed). You may submit a film already completed within the past year. All projects must be between 1 – 10 minutes in length and need to be dance created for film. Films must be made with the intention to be viewed as a screen dance and not documentation.
Choreographers have until February 12th to submit an idea for a piece and until March 1st to submit a first draft that should be about 70% complete. This means that your casting and work with your cast should start before the March 1st deadline. A second and final draft will need to be submitted by March 29th. You will begin casting and work following the December 4th auditionee deadline by watching the auditionees’ video submissions in the “All Applicants” tab. If you see someone you would like to cast, make sure their casting status still says they are available.
Each submission will be adjudicated by Ruth Barnes, Azaria Hogans, Sarah Wilcoxon, and a guest artist after the second and final draft submission on March 29th. If your piece is selected, you will be contacted by one of the faculty members.
For clarification: dancers need to have their auditions in by December 4th. Choreographers will need to let the faculty know they are working on something by February 12th, and their first draft will be due March 1st. Please share to anyone in the Department of Theatre and Dance who might be interested, and make sure to get all submission requirements completed on time. This is an amazing opportunity for students. Don’t miss it!
