Top 5 reasons to add an event to master calendar

January 17, 2017 by Mary Chiles

Are you looking to share your university event and need help getting the word out? Just add the event to the master calendar. It’s a quick and easy way to ensure that it’s available to the biggest audience possible. Not convinced? Consider this:

community members listen to a public affairs lecture

  • You can share the link on social media. That way, people can still find it even if they don’t have access to the original post.
  • Adding your event to the calendar means a broader audience sees it, including people who weren’t aware of your organization.
  • The calendar is the best way to make Marketing and Communications aware of your event so that MarCom can promote it.
  • Adding the event to the calendar is more reliable than sending reminders to email addresses, which may be outdated. The event invite might also be marked as spam, meaning some people won’t get the message.
  • It’s easy! Here is an example. Note the short, clear sentences.

  1. Submit the event as far in advance as possible. Your goal should be at least two weeks in advance.
  1. Upload a photo that relates to the event. Resize images to 700 pixels wide and 394 pixels tall for highest quality. Here’s how to Save for Web on Photoshop.
  1. List time, date and venue in appropriate sections. You don’t need to include date in the event description.
  1. Double-check details for accuracy, as only a calendar administrator can edit an event once it has been submitted and approved.
  1. Check off the boxes in event inclusion if they apply.

Sustainability Web Site Updated

November 11, 2009 by

Sustainability Web SiteThe Sustainability web site has been updated with new media and a new look. You can access it at http://www.missouristate.edu/sustainability/.

The new design incorporates an updated navigation structure as well as feeds of blog news and events.

The entire site is within Web Press. The changes to the site design were done completely through CSS.

Lindsay Winchester designed the look of this site and its new media counterparts. Students Greg Bartlett and Ray Lehnhoff coded the CSS content and converted content within Web Press. Brad Mitchell set up the new media components. Chad Killingsworth coded the new calendar feed. Brian Heaton coded the social media buttons.

International Center and Missouri State University Foundation Web Sites Updated

Yesterday, a couple of web sites went live that had substantial updates:

  • Missouri State University Foundation
  • International Center

Both of these sites are within Web Press. Because the Missouri State Foundation is a separate entity from the University, it uses a custom html template.

Additionally, these sites used some features that are available to all University web sites:

  • Custom stylesheet
A CSS stylesheet sets the colors, backgrounds, fonts, etc of the sites. On the International Center, this was applied to the standard University template to tweak it to a unique design.
  • Master calendar feed
The International Center homepage shows events on the master calendar from each of its subsites (International Center, English Language Institute, China Programs, International Business Programs and International Student Services). The Foundation web site includes Foundation and Alumni Association events. When events are added to the master calendar that are sponsored by these units, they automatically appear on each site’s homepage.
  • News feed through a blog
Each site has a corresponding blog site that houses the news and updates. The RSS feed for the blog is fed into the site’s homepage. When a post is made to the blog, it automatically appears on the site’s homepage.
  • Spotlights/testimonials
The sites also use a new spotlights system, which is a central system that collects photos, videos and text about a faculty/staff member, student, alum or donor. Each spotlight can be associated with a department, and then the associated spotlights can display on the department’s web pages.

University units wanting more information about using these features can contact the Office of Web and New Media at x65271 or web@missouristate.edu.
