Wellness Works

3 Nutritional Talks to Attend this Fall

August 31, 2017 by Benjamin Hunt

The Employee Wellness Program is excited to offer a series of informative nutritional talks, all presented by experienced dietitians who teach in the Dietetics Program.  Also, due to our love of food, a light meal will be served at each session!

All events will take place in the Professional Building, Room 224.  (PROF is located at the corner of Cherry and Kimbrough).

Nutrition Myths: Fact or Fiction?  – Tuesday, September 12th  (5:15 – 6:30 PM)

Is there anything to the Keto Diet?  Will eating coconut oil help me lose weight and lower my cholesterol?  Do drinks like kombucha, antioxidant-infused waters, bone broth, cold-brew coffees, and pH-balanced waters improve my health?  We have all seen the advertisements and heard the anecdotal stores, but in this session, you will learn fact from fiction on these (and many other!) topics.  Feel free to bring your questions about other trendy nutrition topics as well.

Presenter: Natalie Allen, MEd, RD, LD

A Good Gut Feeling: Restoring Optimal Digestive Function – Tuesday, October 17th  (5:15 – 6:30 PM)

Over 70 million people in the U.S. suffer from some sort of digestive illness, and when digestive health is compromised, we can face major health consequences.  In this session, you will learn how to alleviate symptoms of common concerns (acid reflux, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, IBS, and others) through nutrition.  The key roles of healthy gut bacteria for digestive and overall health will also be emphasized.  If you have ever suffered with digestive discomfort, you will not want to miss this talk!

Presenter: Tara Stulce, MPH, RD, LD

Turning Weight Loss Saboteurs into Supporters – Thursday, November 16th  (5:15 – 6:30 PM)

“Oh, have some fun. You can have a piece of cake and start your diet again tomorrow.” “Ever since you started this diet, we never go out to eat anymore.”  Ever had these statements tossed your way?  Or had coworkers bring you Hurt’s Donuts even though you said no?  In this session, you will learn about why people sabotage our attempts to eat healthy.  You will also learn several strategies to overcome these barriers (and still have friends!) and how you can avoid being a saboteur.

Presenter: Daniela Novotny, MS, RD, LD, CHES
