Dr. Wafaa Kaf, Audiologist and Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Missouri State University

Abstract

Hypersensitivity to sounds or the so-called hyperacusis is when everyday sounds are intolerable, with the perception of being too loud, annoying, or even painful. Intolerance to sounds is a common trait in individuals with tinnitus (ear ringing), auditory processing disorders, ASD, ADHD, and migraine. In my lab, we have studied hyperacusis in humans and preclinical animal models to assess the involvement of the auditory system
