Grant to improve science literacy

August 2, 2011 by Gale Lininger

Dr. Janice Greene, professor of biology; and Erica Cox, aquatics education specialist at Missouri State University, received a grant for the project, “Interpretation and Communication of Ecological Monitoring in the National Park Service (NPS) Heartland Network,” from the National Park Service for $206,200.

The purpose of the project is to develop programs for park interpreters and develop curricula for teachers to use in their own classrooms. “A major goal is to improve the general science literacy of the public and students, and to help people understand the role of science in the management of national parks,” said Greene.

This project will serve the park community and will allow more resources to be accessible to the general public. It will also provide Missouri State students with the opportunity to help develop many science-based educational materials.

For more information, contact Greene at (417) 836-5306 or Cox at (417) 836-4337.
