COE BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETING Minutes
February 21, 2014, 8:00 AM
Hill 314
- Family and Consumer Sciences Program
- Debra Price provided handouts and her rationale for having the Family and Consumer Sciences program become a part of COE. She pointed out that her students are already taking CFD courses, as there are 5 CFD courses that are required by FACS majors. There was discussion by the Budget Committee who agreed FACS was a good fit in COE but it was determined that the only way that COE could accept the program was if the salary and fringes for the faculty member were given to COE when the program was moved.
- Counselors to Campus
- Dr. Marci Dowdy presented a synopsis of how the previous Counselor to Campus visits went and provided handouts asking for further funding to continue the program this coming school year. The funding request was based on 50 counselors coming in the fall of 2014 (27 counselors came in the fall of 2013) and 300 students coming to campus in the spring of 2015. The amount of funding requested was $92,600, but Dean Hough suggested rounding up to an even $100,000 including the $40,000 unspent carryover. It was asked how it could be determined if the program actually added additional enrollees to MSU, Dean Hough replied that Admissions has assigned the students who had visited in Spring 2014 with M#, so we can see if they actually do enroll. Along with that information, the answer to a question of why they decided to attend MSU can help determine if the program is working. The motion was put to the committee as to whether or not COE should fund, with the provision that the dean would attempt to get support from the Provost, other colleges, etc. The motion passed.
- BOG/COE Goals
- The information that was gathered at the January 17, 2014, faculty meeting was forwarded to the Faculty Advisory Committee for review. The FAC will analyze the information and then forward their suggestions as what should be considered for funding. Dean Hough noted that the major themes he saw emerging was faculty lines and programs. Dean Hough pointed out that those items will need to be funded with on-going money, not one-time funds. The department heads will take the information received from the FAC to their faculty, discuss priorities, and then each department will suggest a program to promote. The dean suggested that before the items come to the Budget Committee they should be discussed at the college-wide meeting in August so that everyone will know the details. He then suggested that the Leadership Council make a recommendation to the COE Budget Committee.
- Balance Sheets
- Teresa provided budget documents for the College of Education, departments, and ancillary operations, with the exception of the RPDC. She will forward that information to the committee soon.
- Storefronts to reduce cash collections
- Dean Hough informed the committee that there will be a total of three storefronts. One for general COE, one for Greenwood, and one is already in place for the Child Development Center. Dr. DePaepe asked if her student group could use the store front to pay registration fees, etc., and Teresa answered that student groups could not use the storefront, as they all have their own checking accounts for their deposits.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
The next COE Budget Committee meeting is scheduled for March 21, 2014, in Hill Hall 314.
Respectfully submitted,
Teresa Steele, Budget Officer
