COE BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
March 21, 2014, 8:00 AM
Hill 314
- MAT Advertisements – Fred Groves
- Dr. Groves provided a handout and requested that ads for the MAT program in West Plains be placed in two weekly newspapers, the Summersville Beacon and the Ozark Horse Trader. An informal survey had been done previously, and the results showed that these two weekly newspapers had more readership than the area daily newspapers. It was pointed out by Dr. Pearman that in the past putting ads in newspapers did not get the anticipated results, and the BC agreed that if this year’s efforts do not provide adequate results they would not support submitting any more newspaper ads for the MAT program in West Plains. Dr. Groves’ request was granted with the stipulation that numbers of students in the WP MAT cohort must improve. The BC asked Dean Hough to inform the West Plains faculty and staff and ask them to submit a list of recruitment activities they are undertaking with Wroy Roworth who is now spending two days a week in WP to help them recruit more students into education programs.
- Deanne Camp
- Dr. Camp requested $1,000 to be used to give $50 stipends for the Literacy Program. As time was an issue, Dean Hough has already approved this request. The committee agreed unanimously to support Dean Hough’s decision.
- Updated COE Balance Sheets
- Teresa Steele provided updated budget sheets for the College of Education. Dean Hough pointed out that we are on track, and should carry forward approximately $500,000. Janice Duncan pointed out that the GLS balance sheet was inaccurate. Teresa Steele agreed to check into the matter and report back.
- Counselors to Campus
- Dean Hough announced that the Provost has transferred $65,000 into the C2C account, making a total of $100,000 for the 2014 – 2015 program.
- Dean Hough encouraged the department heads and committee members to get the word out that the Program Support Fund still has a balance, so faculty members may continue to submit proposals to the COE Budget Committee, as Dr. Groves and Dr. Camp have done.
- Dean Hough asked the departments to develop a list of personnel needs for their programs. The COE LC, per our policy, will review requests in the fall 2014 sometime after the August College Meeting. Departments are to bring prioritized needs and requests for personnel to the LC, and the requests will be discussed during structured work sessions at the college-wide meeting in August. These requests will then be taken to the Faculty Advisory Council, who will forward their recommendation to the COE Budget Committee. The COE Budget Committee will discuss overall College needs, and then approve general use of funds for faculty positions. The BC will not be involved in discussion pertaining to specific positions or “line” but will identify sources of funding. The results of the Faculty Advisory Committee and COE Budget Committee will then be forwarded to the Leadership Council by the department head and representatives from each department, and the Leadership Council will make the final decision.
- Dean Hough asked BC members for suggestions regarding programs, projects, and initiatives COE should be undertaking. The FAC began similar conversations based on input from the Spring College Faculty Meeting and will continue discussing same during their meeting in April. This topic will be the first agenda item at the next COE Budget Committee meeting on April 25.
Respectfully submitted,
Teresa Steele
