What's happening in the field?

At the Missouri State Fruit Experiment Station

Last week’s freeze

April 14, 2009 by Marilyn Odneal

Well, it looks like we made it through the freeze last week without any major fruit flower damage.  This means we are still on for a good crop of peaches and apples this year, at least for our area.  Checking the the various fruit crop flowers I saw some damage to the pears but still a good crop, we will not have to thin.  Apples looked good also.  My surprize was the peaches.  I could only find 1 or 2 % flower death, which means thinning will be needed.  It will be interesting to check around the State to see how commerical growers made it through the freeze.  If you have fruit trees that were in bloom let us know how they made out in the freeze.  The flower ovaries should be turning brown by now if damaged.
