Jessica Buchheit is being featured for her community engagement with The Kitchen Clinic. She became involved with The Kitchen through a service learning option that was offered in her Organic I class. After an application process, Jessica was offered a volunteer position on Thursday mornings during the spring 2010 semester. Her duties included filling, filing, dispensing and releasing medications; counseling patients, rooming patients, and providing other assistance as needed. In addition, she worked weekly with two licensed pharmacists in order to help the clinic catch up on patient refills and volunteered her Saturdays to clean and do routine maintenance around the facility. Along with her work at the clinic, Jessica organized a Thanksgiving Food Drive with fellow students that initially began with class participation from students and faculty in Biomedical Sciences, Biology and Chemistry. This food drive elicited a huge response from the campus community and ended with 3.5 tons of food being donated to The Kitchen Pantry. Lastly, Jessica had the opportunity through her church to become involved with The Rare Breed; a branch of The Kitchen that assists homeless teenagers. During her involvement she repainted, cleaned, landscaped and provided new bedding and toiletries for their apartment housing. Jessica’s dedication to the community through The Kitchen is why she is being recognized as February’s Public Affairs Student Spotlight!
