Ms. Pham has included in the packet for this study tour a packing list as well as a check list to help prepare for the trip. Because it’s a class and trip all in one, it’s important to prepare well for when we get there so we can enjoy the most out of it. Some of you are experienced travelers already so you may agree with me when I say there are things that you just have to learn once you land in a foreign land and experience different cultures that cannot be taught in a textbook or by doing research.
- Expect the unexpected – no matter how much we prepare there will always be something that goes different from plan. The best way to deal with it is patience and quick thinking. Since we’re traveling in such a big group, communication will be hard. Sometimes we’ll just have to roll with whatever happens, some things just can’t be controlled.
- “But that’s not how we do it at home” – yes, but that doesn’t mean what they are doing is wrong. It’s just the way they do it in their country/local region. Which reminds me of Greg’s comment on my post about Singapore’s laws: “Different country, different rules.” <= yes sir! So keep an open mind about learning about a new culture.
- Food will be different – unless you have been exposed or have a good knowledge of Asian food then there will be many dishes that will be exotic to you. It’s good to be adventurous but remember there is a difference in quality consistency in the developing markets vs. developed markets we will be visiting.
- Be cautious – experiencing new places is very exciting and it’s easy to get carried away. It’s important to remember to be careful about the placements of important document and cash. You don’t want to be flashing them around in improper places.
If there’s anything else that you would like to share, please add it in the comments below. I’m really looking forward to traveling together with you all!
