The spring semester is well underway, and Access & Success Programs has experienced a strong start to 2026. January and February were filled with opportunities for students to build community, strengthen academic skills, and grow as leaders. Below is a recap of recent programming, along with recognition of several outstanding students!
Programming
Study Sessions
Bears Lead Ambassadors hosted two focused study sessions to support students early in the semester.
January: Syllabus Party
Students gathered to review their syllabi, map out key assignments and deadlines, and set academic goals for the semester.
February: Prepping for Advising
February’s study session centered on preparing students for upcoming advising appointments. Participants reviewed degree requirements, discussed course selection, and developed questions to make the most of their meetings with advisors.
Lunch & Learns
In partnership with the Student Resource Center, Lunch & Learns provided students with an opportunity to connect with Missouri State faculty, staff, and members of the Springfield community. Each session included a provided meal and a conversation designed to introduce campus resources, highlight professional pathways, and encourage meaningful dialogue.
Monthly Meetings
First Years
First-year students participated in two monthly meetings focused on personal development and campus involvement.
Healthy Relationships
Students heard from Charity Jordan Rex of Harmony House, who discussed the foundations of healthy relationships, including communication, boundaries, and respect.
Leadership Fair
Former Bears Leaders shared their experiences and hosted tables where students could learn about student organizations, leadership opportunities, and how to get involved on campus. The event provided practical guidance on stepping into leadership positions and building campus connections.
Second Years
Second-year students attended a panel discussion focused on internships. Current and former Bears Leaders shared their experiences securing and completing internships, offering advice on applications, interviews, and balancing professional responsibilities with academic commitments. The discussion provided valuable insight into career preparation and experiential learning.
Palentine’s Day Event
Students gathered for a Palentine’s Day event centered on community building. Activities included cookie decorating and crafts, offering a relaxed space for students to build friendships and connect with their fellow Bears Leaders.
Hockey Game
Students attended a Missouri State Bears hockey game in support of Bears Leader Gavin Henderson and the team. The outing provided an opportunity to build community and show school spirit.
Ambassador Retreat
Bears Lead Ambassadors participated in a retreat focused on relationship-building and team development. Through food, games, and conversation, ambassadors strengthened their connections and celebrated their team’s success so far this academic year.
Student Spotlight
During winter break, Bears Lead Ambassador Ryanna Hatfield traveled to the United Arab Emirates with Dr. Leslie Seawright for a week-long education abroad experience. While visiting Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, she explored the region’s culture, customs, and leadership values. Reflecting on the experience, Ryanna shared:
“Grateful for an incredible education abroad experience in the UAE. Traveling to Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi allowed me to gain firsthand insight into the culture, customs, and leadership values of the region. From exploring historic souqs and museums to visiting modern landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and Qasr Al Watan, I saw how tradition and innovation work together. As a Business Management and Leadership student, this experience strengthened my global perspective and highlighted the importance of cultural intelligence in effective leadership.”
Daniel Paige, a Bears Lead Ambassador, is known for his consistent support of his peers and his contributions to a collaborative academic environment. Recently featured by Missouri State University’s English Department, Daniel has demonstrated a clear commitment to helping classmates succeed and creating spaces where students feel encouraged and supported. After graduating in May, he will continue his work in higher education by pursuing a master’s degree in Student Affairs at Missouri State University. We are excited to see him grow as a student affairs professional.
Several Bears Leaders are members of the Maroon Dynasty dance team. In February, the team delivered its first halftime performance at a Missouri State women’s basketball game. Their performance marked an important milestone and showcased their dedication to representing the university both as performers and leaders.
Access Programs
Access & Success Programs Director, Dr. Ryan Reed, recently attended the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield Youth of the Year awards, celebrating outstanding young leaders in the community. This year’s recipient, Emilee Hinkle, a junior at Parkview High School, was recognized for her leadership, academic achievement, and commitment to service. Access & Success Programs is proud to support students like Emilee and will match her scholarship award if she chooses to attend Missouri State University, reinforcing our commitment to investing in future Bears and strengthening partnerships within the Springfield community.
