From connecting with new people to getting involved across campus, our Bears Leaders made the most of September. This month brought opportunities to learn, lead, build community, and celebrate the people who make Bears Lead special.
Bears Lead Programming
Monthly Meetings
We kicked off the month with a combined First- & Second-Year Meeting: Meet Your Major on September 1st. Students had the opportunity to network with Missouri State faculty and staff, learn more about different majors and areas of study, and connect with professionals across campus.
Our First-Year Meeting on September 22nd focused on an important part of college life: Healthy Relationships. Students learned about healthy relationships and boundaries from Ellen Currie, Coordinator of Student Care and Support. The conversation gave our first-year Bears Leaders an opportunity to think about what healthy relationships look like and how boundaries can support positive connections.
On September 29th, Second-Year Bears Leaders participated in Conversation Circles, a partnership with Global Education & Engagement for the Public Affairs Conference. Students discussed topics ranging from culture and current events to holidays and English idioms, connecting with international and domestic students, faculty, staff, and community members. The event encouraged meaningful conversations, new perspectives, and stronger campus connections.
Study Session
Our Bears Leaders came together for a Study Session on September 16th. These sessions give students a chance to focus on their academics while spending time with fellow Bears Leaders and building community along the way.
Family Weekend Tailgate
For Family Weekend, Bears Lead partnered with Global Education & Engagement for the football tailgate on September 19th. Students enjoyed time together and celebrated the Missouri State community during one of the university’s favorite traditions.
Tabling Events
September also provided opportunities to showcase Bears Lead and Access & Success Programs across campus. At the Library Partner Fair and Fall Showcase, we connected with students, shared information about our office, and introduced prospective students to the opportunities available through Bears Lead.
Bears Lead Socials
Our Bears Leaders also made time to have fun and build community outside of our regular programming!
On September 25th, ambassadors Sterhlyng and Vince hosted a Volleyball Social. Bears Leaders attended the women’s volleyball game together and cheered on the Bears while enjoying time with their peers.
On September 29th, ambassadors Kendalyn and Keri hosted a Soccer Social. Bears Leaders came together to attend the men’s soccer game and support our Bears!
Thank you to all of our ambassadors who helped create opportunities for our students to connect, have fun, and make memories together.
Access Programs
Partner Spotlight: KC Scholars
We are proud to partner with Great Jobs KC and the KC Scholars Scholarship Program to support students pursuing their education at Missouri State University.
Great Jobs KC is a Kansas City-based nonprofit focused on expanding access to college scholarships, tuition-free skills training, and career opportunities for individuals from low- and modest-income households. The organization serves students and adults across six Kansas City-area counties: Cass, Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties in Missouri, and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.
The KC Scholars program provides scholarship opportunities for students at different stages of their educational journey, including traditional scholarships for high school juniors, college-specific scholarships, adult learner scholarships, and a college savings match program.
At Missouri State, KC Scholars recipients participate in Bears Lead, giving students an opportunity to build relationships, develop leadership skills, get involved on campus, and find community alongside their peers. We are excited to support our KC Scholars students not only in their academic journey, but also as they grow as leaders and become an important part of the Missouri State community.
Great Jobs KC also provides Scholars with additional support beyond scholarship funding, including academic assistance, educational resources, transportation and technology support, and connections to community resources when students encounter challenges along their educational journey.
We are grateful for our partnership with Great Jobs KC and the opportunity to welcome KC Scholars to the Bears Lead community!
Student Spotlights
September was also a month to celebrate the students who make Bears Lead such a special community!
Ambassadors of the Month
First Year Team: Keri Sheffield
Keri has gone above and beyond as a first-year ambassador! She has been an excellent photographer and videographer for our events, capturing the moments that make Bears Lead special.
Keri also planned the Bears Lead Soccer Social. Her creativity, initiative, and willingness to get involved have made a wonderful impact on our team.
Second Year Team: Ashley Jones
Ashley has gone above and beyond as a second-year ambassador! She is always one of the first to volunteer to work events, from tabling opportunities to tailgates.
Ashley brings a warm, welcoming smile to everything she does, helping make Bears Lead events more fun for everyone. We are so lucky to have her as part of our team!
Bears Leader of the Month: Azul Longoria
Congratulations to Azul Longoria, our September Bears Lead Student of the Month!
Azul was nominated by another Bears Leader, who shared:
“Azul always comes to monthly meetings with a positive spirit, encourages others around her, and volunteers to help out.”
Azul’s positive attitude and willingness to support those around her embody the spirit of Bears Lead. Congratulations, Azul! We love having you as a member of Bears Lead!
Bears Leaders Making an Impact
Dalton Bailey
Dalton Bailey is a first-year Bears Leader already making an impact on campus! Recently elected to Hammons Hall Council as Homecoming & General Assembly Chair and joining the SGA Outreach & Development Commission, Dalton is helping strengthen student involvement and build community on campus. We are excited to see where his leadership takes him!
Mariah Johnson
Mariah Johnson is a Bears Leader making an impact through sustainability and service! As manager of Missouri State’s Campus Garden, Mariah is helping address food insecurity, create volunteer opportunities, and build community. With more than 700 pounds of produce harvested this season, Mariah is making a meaningful difference both on campus and beyond. We are proud to celebrate the work Mariah is doing and the ways she is using her leadership to serve others.
Staff Spotlight
DOSA Awards
Access & Success Programs was recognized with a Department of Student Affairs award for Promotion of Public Affairs. The award recognizes the work behind our partnership with the Center for Community Engagement for the Spring 2026 Bear Break service-learning trip to Nashville. Through this partnership, five Bears Lead students received a fully funded opportunity to serve the Nashville community while learning more about food insecurity. This experience brought together leadership, service, public affairs, and community engagement – all important parts of the Bears Lead experience. We are grateful to everyone who helped make this opportunity possible and proud of the students who represented Missouri State through service.
We are also excited to celebrate Bears Lead Program Coordinator, Armani Eason, who was recognized as an Outstanding Individual Championing Connection, Engagement, and Awareness. This award recognizes the people who help create meaningful connections, encourage engagement, and bring greater awareness to the work happening across our campus community. Congratulations, Armani!
