Tooth for an Eye, photograph by Deborah Luster

The image that accompanies this release is from Luster’s series: Tooth for an Eye: A Chorography of Violence in Orleans Parish.  The circle of the lens that masks these images relates to the scope of a gun as it documents historic homicide sites, exploring themes of loss and remembrance. While Luster’s work takes on a range of subjects, it is always intimate and deeply personal and simultaneously detached and inviting scrutiny.

About the artist

Deborah Luster has received numerous awards for her photographic work including a 2018 Ford Foundation Art of Change fellowship, a 2016 Robert Gardner Fellowship from the Peabody Museum, and a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship.

Her photographs are included in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, New Orleans Museum of Art, and other notable public and private collections.

Luster has exhibited her work at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Columbia College, Chicago; Prospect. 1 International Biennial, New Orleans, Jack Shainman Gallery, New York; Ballroom Marfa; and the Bell Gallery at Brown University.
