All are welcome to experience a new, slowwwweerrr way of seeing and discussing art by attending Slow Viewing, a new program encouraging students, faculty, and community members to look, ponder, and analyze artwork both with themselves and each other in a relaxed setting.

The Slow Viewing events occur in the Brick City Gallery and are led by Shauna Smith, a graduate student studying visual arts who also serves as the graduate gallery assistant. Shauna started the Slow Viewing events at the Springfield Art Museum, and they now coincide with exhibitions presented in the Brick City Gallery.

Slow Viewing nights occur with the following exhibits:

• Human +: living and making during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, January 28 and February 4, 5:30-6:30pm
• Back in my Body, February 25, 5:30-6:30pm
• Chernobyl/Fukushima Poster Collection, March 25, 5:30-6:30pm
• BFA in Art, April 29 and May 6, 5:30-6:30pm

During Slow Viewing events, gallery visitors silently observe for the first 30 minutes while the last 30 minutes is spent in discussion with the group. The purpose of the program highlights the value in taking one’s time and fully considering, framing, and re-framing artwork in different ways. By slowing down and focusing on an observant and intentional connection to the artwork, visitors are more apt to trust their own analyses and give value to their individualized experiences with art before considering the interpretations of curators, the artist themselves, or other viewers. “It is a supportive practice for anyone wanting to develop their skills of interpretation, observation, discussing art, or simply wanting to slow down,” shares Shauna, “All are welcome to participate in Slow Viewing; no art experience is required.”
