Take a moment to get to know Abby Dunker, the new SOAR Family Assistant.

Tell us about yourself.   Hello! My name is Abby Dunker, and I am the Family Assistant for the SOAR program! I am from Creighton, Missouri and I am majoring in Health Services with a minor in Health Care Management. Additionally, I am a junior at MSU this year. In my free time I like to be in nature as much as I can, hangout with friends, and make buffalo chicken dip.

Abby Dunker, SOAR Family Assistant

You were a SOAR leader this past summer. Why did you apply to be a SOAR Leader and what did you learn from the experience?  Being a SOAR leader this past summer was an amazing experience! I applied to be a SOAR leader because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone, gain new experience, and meet new people! This experience has helped enhance personal growth, leadership capabilities, and practical skills that are valuable in both academic and professional settings.

What are you involved with on campus? Why is involvement important for college students? I am involved in Student Activities Council, University Ambassadors, and the Bears Mentoring Bears program. Involvement is important for college students because it aids in engagement and success.

Students who are involved in campus activities feel more connected to their institution, which can lead to higher motivation and success. Involvement also helps students develop a sense of responsibility and connection to their college community.

What is your favorite tradition at Missouri State? Why? My favorite tradition at Missouri State is fountain day which is a day when students gather to celebrate and enjoy the outdoor fountain on campus! It is a fun and festive event that fosters a sense of community spirit among everyone at the University. Additionally, students get to have a little bottle of fountain water for remembrance.

You applied and were hired to be a member of the Pro Staff for the New Student Orientation and Family Programs staff. You are the new Family Assistant. Why did you apply to be on the Pro Staff, and what do you hope to  gain from this experience? I applied to be on Pro Staff because I am passionate about creating a welcoming and supportive environment for new students and their families. I understand that college can be both an exciting and challenging time and wanted to help ease this transition. Additionally, I believe that a strong support system from the beginning can make a significant difference in success for the students.

From this experience, I hope to gain a better understanding of the operations and strategies behind orientation programs and family engagement. Additionally, I hope to grow professionally and personally through the challenges and successes of this role. Overall, I am excited about the opportunity to be involved in the program and to contribute to the success of the Missouri State community.

Share a fun fact about yourself.  I have a copper koi beta fish named Mckoi who has been with me for my whole college career so far!

What is a piece of advice you have for our new students on campus? Take time to explore and get involved in activities that interest you! College offers the chance to explore new interests, interact with a wide range of individuals, and develop in unexpected ways. Do not be scared to venture beyond our comfort zone! Keep in mind that as you navigate this chapter of your life, it is always acceptable to ask for assistance or guidance from others.

What is a piece of advice you have for the family members of our students? Encourage your student to embrace the opportunities and challenges of college life with an open mind. It is important to support them while also being available to listen and offer guidance when needed. Trust in their ability to navigate this experience and remind your student that it is normal to have ups and downs. Also, remember that your role in this journey is valuable, and your encouragement can make a significant difference in their transition.

The SOAR application is open now. Why should someone apply to be a SOAR Leader?  Being a SOAR leader offers a range of great benefits and opportunities. You should consider being a SOAR leader because you can develop leadership skills, build strong connections, and experience personal growth while contributing positively to our campus community!

Apply to be a SOAR Leader.
