Shelby Hulsey, junior criminology student, wanted to learn about another culture while also making a difference outside of the U.S. She applied for the Cultural Understanding Language Proficiency (CULP) mission through the ROTC at Missouri State. She was selected to be on the team going to Bulgaria with other ROTC students from other universities.
Hulsey said this experience will help in her career path exponentially. She learned how other countries perceive Americans, which is important when making military decisions on foreign policy.
“I also learned how to work with soldiers from another country, which helped me learn that despite cultural and language differences, goals can be achieved and connections can be made,” she said. “This connects with my future goals of working as an Army Officer by helping me become more culturally aware and competent.”
