In May 2015, Sigma Mu Sigma, the Missouri State University chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, was awarded three STAR Awards from the Student Organization offices on campus. These are competitive awards that are bestowed upon organizations based on several criteria in multiple categories. Sigma Mu Sigma won in the category of Academic / Educational Programming for their efforts in hosting bi-annual ALICE (active shooter) training on campus in conjunction with the Missouri State University Public Safety Office and the Springfield Police Department. Sigma Mu Sigma also won in the category of Volunteer Work / Service Project for their room adoption at Harmony House – The Family Violence Center in Springfield, Missouri, where they conduct annual projects to update, clean and refresh a room within the shelter, which has included painting, refurbishing furniture, replacing bedding, hanging curtains and blinds, stripping the floor and replacing floor tiles. Christine Hannis, the 2014-2015 Graduate Vice President of the student organization, took home an individual award for Outstanding Graduate Student for her work with the organization and as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
