On August 10th, Drs. Elizabeth Sobel and F. Scott Worman presented results of their ongoing research into the industrial history of northwest Greene County during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The presentation was part of a Missouri Bicentennial Celebration organized by the Greene County Archives and held at the historic Greene County Courthouse. Their interdisciplinary work incorporates archaeology, oral history, and more traditional document-based historical research. The presentation focused on the Ash Grove White Lime and Phenix Marble Companies, the ecological impacts of firing the lime kilns at Ash Grove almost exclusively with wood, and the daily lives of workers who lived in the company towns built and owned by each company. The Sociology and Anthropology department was also represented by a presentation about the Springfield African American Heritage Trail organized by Dr. Lyle Foster, and Drs. Marlin Barber and Kathleen Kennedy represented the History Department.
