Dr. Robert Pavlowsky, director of the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute (OEWRI) at Missouri State University, was awarded a grant of $88,113 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for “Mining Sediment in Viburnum Trend Streams.”
“The USFWS wants to know how much metal-contaminated sediment is in streams draining active mines so that management plans can be developed to address contamination problems, if found,” said Pavlowsky.
The project is an extension of previous research done in southeast Missouri’s Old Lead Belt, about 30 miles north of the present project, and is the first study of its kind to directly evaluate mining contamination trends in the region.
The funding will be used to support field and lab work and to fund undergraduate and graduate student positions.
