Expanding Your Horizons teaches disaster preparedness to middle school females

October 31, 2013 by Gale Lininger

CERT Expanding Your Horizons STEMKeeping young women interested in the sciences is a goal for all STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) professionals, and each year Missouri State University’s College of Natural and Applied Sciences hosts Expanding Your Horizons to reach middle school aged females. This year, the theme was “Introduction to CERT (Community Emergency Response Team),” which taught the participants disaster preparedness.

The event, which was held Oct. 26, utilized faculty and staff from Missouri State as well as from the office of emergency management of Springfield-Greene County.

“Thinking not only about emergencies, but about the science of disasters – earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, fires, freezing cold and hazmat issues – and their effects on humans hopefully increased awareness for the need for preparedness and for the need for scientists in the fields of biology, geology, meteorology, engineering and chemistry to name a few,” said Kathy Hughes, biology instructor and coordinator of Expanding Your Horizons 2013.

Students viewed and participated in disaster simulations, and stations in fire suppression with a burn pan/extinguishers, cribbing, light search and rescue, triage and medical stations.
