Congratulations to the biology department

CNAS recognizes the biology department’s many recent publications.

The past few months have been impressive for Missouri State’s biology department.  

Several biology professors, students and alumni have co-authored publications during that time.   

We are grateful for their contributions to the scientific community. 

About the publications 

The recent publications co-authored by biology professors, students and alumni include: 

  • Graduate student Amber Hunter and Dr. Alicia Mathis, department head of biology, published “Behavior in Transition: Recovery of Behavior by an Obligate Parasitic Ant (Formica subintegra) Following Host Removal.”  
  • Benjamin Dalton, laboratory supervisor in CNAS, graduate student Rachel Settle, undergraduate student Kenzie Medley and Mathis published “When Neighbors Cheat: A Test of the Dear Enemy Phenomenon in Southern Red-Backed Salamanders.” 
  • Alumna Meagan D. Rippee-Brooks, undergraduate student Riley N. Marcinczyk and Dr. Christopher Lupfer, assistant professor of biology, published “What Came First, the Virus or the Egg: Innate Immunity During Viral Coinfections.” 
  • Graduate students Hazar Abusalamah and Jessica M. Reel and Lupfer published “Pyruvate Affects Inflammatory Responses of Macrophages During Influenza A Virus Infection.”
  • Lupfer, Paras K. Anand, Xiaopeng Qi and Hasan Zaki published “Editorial: Role of NOD-Like Receptors in Infectious and Immunological Diseases.” 
  • Dr. Jay McEntee, assistant professor of biology, John Gordon Burleigh and Sonal Singhal published “Dispersal Predicts Hybrid Zone Widths Across Animal Diversity: Implications for Species Borders Under Incomplete Reproductive Isolation.”
  • Graduate student Gaurab Bhattarai, Anne Fennell, Jason P. Londo, alumna Dr. Courtney Coleman and Dr. Laszlo Kovacs, professor of biology, secured publication of “A Novel Grape Downy Mildew Resistance Locus from Vitis rupestris.” 
  • Alumnae Lauren Cornelison and Sara Woodman, graduate student Neelima Chelliboina and Dr. Paul Durham, distinguished professor of biology, published “Dietary Supplementation With Grape Seed Extract Prevents Development of Trigeminal Sensitization and Inhibits Pain Signaling in a Preclinical Chronic Temporomandibular Disorder Model.”
  • Chemistry graduate student Stephanie D. Dannen, Cornelison, Durham, John E. Morley, Kiana Shahverdi, Junwei Du, Haiying Zhou, Leland C. Sudlow, Daniel Hunter, Matthew D. Wood, Mikhail Y. Berezin and Dr. Nikolay Gerasimchuk, professor of chemistry, published “New  In Vitro Highly Cytotoxic Platinum and Palladium Cyanoximates With Minimal Side Effects In Vivio.”
  • Cornelison, Woodman and Durham published “Inhibition of Trigeminal Nociception by Non-invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Investigating the Role of GABAergic and Serotonergic Pathways in a Model of Episodic Migraine.” 
  • Graduate student Orion Peterson, Cornelison and Durham published “Neuroprotective Effect of Enriched Chicken Bone Broth as a Dietary Supplement in a Model of Migraine Mediated by Early Life Stress.”
