The Earth faces social and environmental problems that can prevent it from thriving.
Promoting sustainability is one way Missouri State University can help the planet address these issues.
Missouri State will host many sustainability-oriented events on its Springfield campus during Earth Week 2021 April 19-23.
Among these events is the presentation of Dr. Robert Pavlowsky, distinguished professor of geography. He will cover the topic of environmental geography and climate change.

Exploring environmental changes in the Ozarks
Pavlowsky will review recent trends in river flooding and related environmental effects caused by climate change in the Ozarks.
The Ozarks region has been affected by more frequent and larger floods in recent years.
This increases risks to property, ecological services and human life, Pavlowsky shares.
“Understanding recent climate change in terms of its causes, effects and social impacts is paramount to creating a sustainable world,” he said. “Being able to understand and predict hydrologic changes in watersheds will help us lessen the effects of climate change and maintain healthy ecosystems.”
