One of the fastest growing interest areas in the sciences is the field of biochemistry.
Experts relate this to innate interest in living things, disease and medicine.
“Biochemistry has provided explanations for the causes of many diseases in humans, animals, and plants and also provided ways they can be cured,” said Dr. Adam Wanekaya, department head of chemistry and biochemistry at Missouri State University.
“Because biochemistry seeks to unravel the complex chemical reactions that occur in a wide variety of life forms, it provides the basis for practical advances in medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture and biotechnology.”
To better reflect the field of chemistry, Missouri State changed the department name to include biochemistry in January 2022.

New faculty, more opportunities
The change to department of chemistry and biochemistry has been discussed for many years as student enrollment increased in the biochemistry emphasis degree option.
“Although biochemistry is one of five sub-disciplines of chemistry, it is the fastest growing and one of the most versatile areas of modern chemistry,” Wanekaya added.
Faculty and administration are constantly evaluating to make sure they are meeting student needs and industry demands. New faculty were recruited to the department who can continue to evolve the curriculum and enhance the program.
“Over the past few years, we have recruited a strong team of young and talented biochemists who continue to attract students in their research programs.”
