It’s not every day you get to hold a 3-billion-year-old rock. But for around 100 fourth graders at Ozark East Elementary School, that rare opportunity made geology come alive and fun.
When Damon Bassett, Missouri State University senior instructor of geology, saw his son learning about landforms and erosion at school, he knew he could help bring the lesson to life. After sending an email to a teacher, what began as a visit to one class quickly turned into a presentation for the entire grade.
On Sept. 22, Bassett brought rock and fossil samples that showed how Earth’s features change over time. Students could touch them, ask questions and see their textbook concepts come to life.
Building a love of science early
Bringing hands-on science into schools is a win-win, Bassett explained. It is not just about geology; it is about making learning feel real.
“You can talk about weathering and erosion all day, but until you see it or hold it, it doesn’t fully make sense,” he said.
Students loved the fossils, especially the giant shark tooth and a coprolite (fossilized feces). Several students even told their teachers they now want to become geologists in the future.
Giving back through community outreach
Bassett’s presentation and outreach engagement with kids aligns with Missouri State’s public affairs mission. He sees it as both a service and a personal passion.
“Universities aren’t just here to educate our students,” he said. “We should be sharing knowledge with the whole community, especially young learners who are still excited to ask questions.”
He encourages other faculty and scientists to do the same. One classroom visit can leave a lasting impact, and the students’ energy is contagious.
