Physicist Dr. Tiglet Besara doesn’t just study compound elements — he’s literally creating new ones.

He is an element explorer of sorts, specifically in a field known as novel materials exploration. This is the process of discovering new materials with unique properties. The work can help address global challenges, such as climate change and resource scarcity.

Besara is credited with creating three new compounds right from his lab in Kemper Hall. His goal? Among many things, to discover new compounds that could be used as thermoelectrics. In layman’s terms: Can these elements capture waste heat and turn it back into energy we can use?
