As a first-generation college student, I always knew that I was going to attend college. It was not an option. I always knew that I was going to graduate from college. It was not an option. It was everything else that I did not know, which included applying to colleges, seeking out financial aid (I had no idea that I was eligible to receive pell grants until I was a junior), wondering what questions to ask, meeting with an academic advisor and utilizing campus resources. Neither of my parents completed elementary school, and that made me part of the First Generation (FG) students around the world. While everyone in my family faced challenges by far much greater than being FG, it is undeniable that the journey through college could get steeper and complicated for FG students. But at the same time, it brings ample opportunities for growth. In general, the lack of resources helps you develop strengths and new abilities, which otherwise might not necessarily grow to their full potential.
