My name is Mike Foster and I am a first generation college student. I grew up in the Panhandle of Florida to a family who had lived in and around that area for about 200 years (literally). I was a decent student in high school, but not remarkable, and had no real intentions of ever going to college. My one distinction is that I had a decent singing voice. While I did often enough get letters from universities inviting me to visit their schools and/or attend their music programs, I never thought I was good enough. I am a proud first-generation student. My mom attended college her freshman year, but then married my dad and never returned to college. Both my parents worked hard to ensure we had a comfortable life and they encouraged us to follow our hearts and pursue a college education. I am really grateful for their support.

I am a first generation college student from my family. I grew up in a small community in northeast Iowa. My father never graduated from high school but my mother graduated from HS earned her RN from a local hospital. My father worked his entire career as a linotypist for a publishing company while my mother worked as a nurse. Hard work was always expected. Although I thought I was studying and doing well, I received a C at midterms in one course during my first year and was completely shocked. I was always a straight A student in high school. I started to wonder if I could even be successful in college. I had so much self-doubt and felt so much pressure to do well. My sister had dropped out and I was the youngest so it was all up to me!
