Ever since I was a young girl, I have always been very friendly and outgoing. To put it simply, I just really love people. I’ve always enjoyed doing things that make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s just one person. This desire of mine quickly developed into a passion for service, and I immersed myself in as many opportunities to share the love as possible. Through these experiences like as volunteering at camp, a mission trip to Nicaragua, tutoring and assisting a middle school color guard team, I decided that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher and spend my days with awesome children, helping them learn.
These past experiences helped me to feel more prepared today as we entered our first day of camp at Wesley-Rankin. I wish there was a way to put in words how amazing our first day was. I was expecting an exciting day, but today was so much more than I could have ever imagined. From the moment the kids first stepped in the door of the gym, I felt nothing but love and happiness in my heart. They were just so excited and welcoming towards us, even though we were some random strangers coming into their home. While I can’t possibly fit every single happy moment into this post, I can attempt to cut it down to just a few of my favorite moments throughout the day.
Some of the highlights of my day included the following:
- When one of the children colored all of his pictures in using only green and red crayon because “They’re my most favoritest colors and I like them.”
- When another boy answered the question, “What is the greatest treasure in nature?” with “the world.”
- Playing beach ball games with all the kids while avoiding the others playing soccer games.
- Working with children of various ages, and learning how to apply lessons to each child in a way that was important to them.
- Using a rather large chef’s knife to slice carrots for our dinner.
- Learning that people actually say “wicked.”
I’ve certainly left out many wonderful moments throughout the day, and my only reasoning is because I am so incredibly exhausted from such a fun filled day! I can’t wait for 6 AM to roll around again tomorrow morning so I can get up and see their bright, shining, beautiful faces!
