Day two is coming to an end and our group gained an amazing new experience along with strengthening the bond within our group. Today we volunteered for a local non-profit called Friends of the White River. This group focuses on keeping the habitat and environment intact among the White River along Indianapolis. In the past several years, an invasive species has grown and drastically impacted the environment of the White River. Honey suckle, the non-native species to this environment, has made it challenging for the animals and other plant species to survive along the river banks.
Today, we focused on removing the invasive species from the river bank, with the help of some volunteers who are active in the community as well as the organization. I can honestly say this was a very exhausting and long day, but the impact we made spoke volumes. After a hard days work, it was obvious how much of a difference we made on this environment. By removing the honey suckle, it will stunt the growth of the plant and the native species, animal and plant alike, will be able to thrive in their habitat before this plant took over. Overall, the Indy group is helping the environment one challenge at a time
