Today was our travel day to Dallas. We had amazing bonding experiences in the van and knowledge was shared about how to order at Whataburger. The verdict was that we absolutely had to try a chicken sandwich with honey butter sauce. It was delicious. Also, we tried to average how many fries were in an order, but it didn’t work out very well because we didn’t have a good algorithm set up for how to count the fries.
We engaged in some great teamwork at Aldi and a bit of a culture shock coming into Dallas. We went to Walmart and all of the signs were posted in both English and Spanish. There were also several Hispanic products on the endcaps of the aisles where in Springfield we would never see those specific brands or items. There is a large Hispanic population here in Dallas which is going to be an amazing experience. There was a failed thrifting experience and an intense conversation about Tinder before reflection. Reflection was a great discussion of helping vs fixing vs serving.
Tomorrow we are serving with Vogel-Alcove. We will be flexible and fill the needs they have, but the plan is to engage with children through storytelling and outdoor enrichment activities. We will also be going to an orientation at the Wesley-Rankin Community Center which is where we will be hosting our educamp Tuesday – Thursday. I am excited to serve the Dallas community this week and cannot wait to come home with this experience!
