It was inspiring to visit the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency today. One aspect of the ACSS is the transitional program that they have that helps people with getting a job called Workforce Development. They offer employment readiness and job placement to homeless individuals, CareerWorks is their cornerstone program. CareerWorks includes a three-week employment readiness training course, personalized case management, job search assistance, professional clothing, transportation assistance, housing placement assistance, mock interviews and individual action plans. While some people arranged the clothing closet, some of us helped out in the kitchen. It was a very humbling experience for me working in the kitchen. I was a server, taking orders and serving them their food. I really enjoyed doing that, pretending it was my cafe and I was a real waitress! The people really appreciated us serving them because they don’t experience that often. I had conversations with some of them during their lunch, and I was surprised at the topics we talked. We had a little a little debate going on at my table. It was refreshing to see how open minded they were, especially on the topics of religion, education, and homelessness.
