“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Center for Civil and Human Rights was an engaging cultural experience in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The various sections provided a comprehensive view of issues concerning movements from the American Civil Rights to Global Human Rights. Seeing new perspectives on these movements was the most impactful experience, in particular I will forever remember the simulation of restaurant sit-ins that occurred throughout the South in the 1960s. I sat on a barstool, put headphones on, placed my hands on the counter, and closed my eyes. I was surprised by what came next.. The reality of this trip, the exhibits, and everything around me ceased to exist. All I could hear was aggressive shouts, racial slurs, and death threats directed at me. I felt people shaking the chair, trying to make me move. I had to sit there in distress and fear while resisting the urge to react violently. I forgot that it was not real.. I cannot bear the thought of children and adults enduring this feeling and experiencing the horrors they did. I barely lasted a minute and half of the simulation..
The stories and history about Civil and Human Rights provided eye-opening insight. Not only did I learn about individuals’ personal experiences and details of the movements, but I learned how to help. We can make a difference with our daily decisions and life-long dedications. Doing research on the products we purchase will prevent the exploitation of impoverished people abroad. Taking the initiative to learn about cultural differences will build respect among communities. Speaking up for those who cannot will restore Human Rights for everyone.
Through exploration of the attractions I gained a deeper understanding of and a greater appreciation for the role I can fulfill to protect the fundamental rights of all people. Equipped with the stories of struggle and progress, our bear breaks team was prepared and motivated for the service opportunities ahead.
