Today I woke up excited and extremely curious as to what the day would entail. After waking up and getting ready, we all headed to Wesley Rankin. On our drive, I was quite shocked by our surroundings. To my left there were really nice, recently constructed townhomes, but, when I glanced to my right I saw a poverty-stricken community. It was a really surreal thing to see. This new construction was clearly invading the living space of several West-Dallas citizens and could potentially affect their own living situations.
When we arrived at Wesley Rankin, we went on a tour of the community center and got a feel for the center. I was so amazed by all this community center did for people of all ages. The sweet lady giving us a tour explained all that they do for the kids at the center. Anything the children wanted–trumpet lessons, knitting lessons, a recreational lacrosse team, etc.–came to life with the help of volunteers within the community. Then she delineated all they do for the elderly guests at the center–hot meals, pool games, crafts, etc. It was such an amazing place to be. You could tell this center really serves so many people.
