Intro
My name is Julianna McKee. My major is Child and Family Development, Child Life. Serving at Children’s Hospital of Colorado has been an amazing experience and has been different from any other service I have done before. We have only been here for two days and I already feel like I have learned more than I have learned during any of my other experiences with other hospitals. Specifically I have learned from the talking with the people I am with about their experiences and how they are feeling about what we do, and also talking with parents who are so appreciative of us being there and giving our time to the hospital.
Service
One place we get to serve is called the creative station. During this time, we do art and crafts with children in main entrance of the hospital. I love this time because you get to see everyone that walks in and out of the hospitals. The parents love the work we do because this causes a distraction for both the child and a break for the parent. We have families sit with us for an hour or just five minutes it depends on why they are at the hospital at the time. The most important thing I notice from this is that if a child sees our table and wants to do crafts a parent does not turn them down. I first recognized this when a mother came through with her daughter. They were only there to pick up a prescription from the pharmacy but they stayed for an hour to do crafts. I truly love that everything in this hospital is not only child oriented but also family oriented.
