My Experience
Hi everyone! My name is Audrey Welhoff and I am a freshman, Speech and Language Pathology major at MSU! This spring break I decided to attend a Bear Break trip to Aurora, Colorado to serve in Colorado Children’s Hospital. So far, my group and I have been in Aurora for about three days. Before serving, I was excited to get to interact with the staff, kids, and families at the hospital but I wasn’t sure what we’d be doing or what impact we’d be making. Any expectations I did have, however, were completely exceeded. Every single person involved with making the hospital run has the most positive attitude and the most dedicated work ethic. My group and I experienced the tremendous impact the hospital has on so many people and we were simply making crafts and playing with kids. It has truly been a joy to serve there and I am so grateful to be a small part of such a great organization.
The Hospital’s Impact
The community that has been formed at Colorado Children’s Hospital makes even the most difficult situations positive in one way or another. Throughout our service, we were able to interact with patients, their families, and volunteers that serve them. The hardships facing the patients and families are very apparent. However, that does not stop them or the volunteers from having a positive attitude. Every single person I interacted with at the hospital always shed a positive light on their situation. They tried their best to focus on the good things happening that day, rather than the bad. I think a lot of this positivity is because of the amazing effort put forth by Colorado Children’s Hospital. They do everything possible to make kids and families comfortable, despite their circumstances. Whether it be making crafts, playing games, or getting a snack, the volunteers and staff make being in a hospital setting as easy as possible.
I am genuinely in awe of the efforts made at Colorado Children’s Hospital and I have learned so much from this experience. I would love to carry what I learn with me back to MSU and into my future career!
